A high school teacher of Indian origin living in the US has accused West Bengal police of deporting her from India under "duress and threat".
Natasha Singh, who was deported to the US after being detained by the Darjeeling police last week, said in a communication that the police made false allegations against her and the circumstances leading to her deportation.
She said she had gone to India to meet with people and organisations working to end exploitation of women in the country. She had gone to West Bengal where she had visited an NGO which was involved in operations to rescue trafficked girls.
Subsequently, Singh had been told that she should leave India in 24 hours.
"I was later detained; my passport was confiscated, and I was not given food to eat - except for a pack of chips - and not permitted to use the bathroom without a guard. I was deported from India under duress and threat of further detention," she said.
Later police made false allegations that she had gone to a jail to meet an ISI agent, she said.
