Int research centre to promote below sea level farming

With an objective of promoting farming located below sea level, an international research centre will be opened at Mankombu in Alappuzha District of Kerala on February 6.

Chief Minister Oommen Chandy will inaugurate the International Research Centre for Below Sea Level Farming, which will be opened under the M S Swaminathan Foundation.

The decision in this regard was taken based on a discussion between the state government and the representatives of the Foundation at the Chief Minister's chamber here today.

State government will give a total of Rs five crore for the research centre, an official release said.

Besides the centre at Mankombu, another similar facility would be opened at Kumarakom also as part of the project, it said.
 

The main objective of the research programme is to promote farming in the regions, located below sea level.
