Press Trust of India Chennai
Joining issue with her arch rival and DMK chief M Karunanidhi, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa today asserted that recruitment of medical staff for a super-speciality hospital here without applying reservation policy was in line with a Supreme Court judgement.

Citing an apex court judgement of July 18 last year, she said as per that no reservation in appointment can be made in speciality and super speciality medical institutions.

Steps to recruit employees for the hospital were being made based on this judgement, existing rules and models, she said in a statement here.

The advertisement has stated that medical employees would be appointed based on contract and deputation, Jayalalithaa said, adding "Reservation would not apply for employees on deputation because they were initially recruited as government doctors based on reservation."

As for those to be recruited on contract basis, the reservation policy would not apply to them, as per Rule 11 of the Tamil Nadu State and Subordinate Services Rules, the Chief Minister explained.

Karunanidhi had last week claimed the AIADMK Government was not following reservation policy in recruitment of doctors for the super-speciality hospital coming up at Omandurar Government Estate here after conversion of the state secretariat building.

Jayalalithaa claimed that the previous DMK Government too had recruited over 540 employees for Tamil Nadu AIDS Control Society, Revised National Tuberculosis Control Programme, Tamil Nadu Hygiene Programme and State Welfare Society, without applying reservation policy on contract basis.

Contending that the Centre alone can bring about a Constitutional amendment to address the situation caused by the Supreme Court's judgement, she expressed hope that the next union government (after Lok Sabha elections) would be in line with AIADMK's policies on making necessary amendments.
