Sri Lankan police today launched a hunt for at least three ghost candidates who are in the fray for provincial council elections to be held next month.
Police Superintendent Ajith Rohana said an investigation was launched following a complaint by election officials in the Western provincial district of Gampaha.
"The complaint was over three non-existent candidates among the list of 39 furnished by the Nava Sama Samaja (New Equal Society) Party," Rohana said.

"We found that their details have been fraudulently included with an affidavit when no such people existed."
Rohana said this was an offence both under the Elections Act and the Criminal Procedure Code. "We hope to make arrests of people on conclusion of investigations," he said.
The polls are scheduled for March 29.
