Press Trust of India New Delhi
Chief of the trauma center of AIIMS, Dr M C Misra, today officially took charge as the institute's director.

He succeeds Dr R C Deka, who retired on September 30.

Misra, who is also the head of the surgery department of the hospital, is a senior faculty with around three decades of experience. He had also played a key role in the treatment of the 23-year-old physiotherapy student who was gangraped on December 16.

His name was forwarded by the institute body of AIIMS, headed by Union Health Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad to the PMO for the final nod.

Mishra was selected from among the five shortlisted candidates.

The other four shortlisted candidates were head of cardiothoracic surgery Dr Balram Airan, head of paediatrics Dr V K Paul, head of gastroenterology Dr S K Acharya and head of pharmacology and AIIMS spokesperson Dr Y K Gupta.

They were shortlisted by the search-cum-selection committee out of the 70-odd applications that it had received for the post from doctors based in India and abroad.
