The Regional Cancer Centre (RCC) here today held an awareness programme to bring to focus the theme that childhood cancers are curable if detected early.
There has been a steady increase in the number of patients visiting the centrally-sponsored JIPMER here every year, of which children alone accounted for 20 per cent of the total patients.
A release from the institute said that 95 per cent of childhood cancer is curable if detected early.But lack of proper understanding of the symptoms of ailment, poor nutrition, abandonment of treatment because of lack of family support had been largely contributing to the aggravation of the ailment.

JIPMER had been getting an increased number of patients fromdifferent parts of the country with the children suffering from the ailment alone accounting for twenty percent of the patients.
The RCC offers psycho social support through counselling, group therapy and other welfare measures.
The RCC also extends educational support to these children hailing from poor families with the help of the non-governmental organisations like CANKIDS, JIVDAYA and Rotaract Club of Puducherry.
