A man who allegedly thrashed and strangulated to death his wife and fled with his child and a tenant at northeast Delhi's Seelampur area has been arrested.

The tenant later turned out to be his second wife.

The incident took place on January 13 when a woman, identified as Firoza (30), was found dead by two neighbours, who informed the deceased woman's landlord and he called up the police. Firoza was lying on a pool of blood with deep wounds on her head and face.

The needle of suspicion soon turned towards Firoza's husband Chand Mohammed who was missing after the incident along with his eight-year-old daughter and tenant Deepa, who was living with the family for the past four months, said police today.

A police team tracked down Deepa at New Delhi Railway station within 24 hours. The child, who was with Deepa, was also rescued by the police, said police.

When Deepa was questioned, she disclosed her identity and relationship with Chand. Meanwhile, Chand had left for his native village in West Bangal's Nadia district.

The police conducted search operations in several trains heading towards West Bengal and major stations midway, but Chand could not be nabbed, said police.

Later, a police team was sent to Chand's house in Nadia, but he was not there too. Things got tougher for the investigators when Chand discarded his SIM card and he could no longer be tracked through technical surveillance.

With the help of the Village Pradhan there, the police reached neighbouring district Murshidabad and conducted raids with the help of the local police, following which Chand was arrested on Tuesday, police added.
