Meghalaya transport minister H D R Lyngdoh today reviewed the ongoing expansion project of Shillong Airport at Umroi and that of the Inter-State bus terminus at Mawiong near here today.

The minister, accompanied by top transport department officials, impressed upon the authorities concerned to speed up both the projects to ensure that people were not at the receiving end.

Lyngdoh's visit to the Airport came two months after the Meghalaya High Court directed the authorities to take into possession over 31 acres of land belonging to the Defence authorities required for the expansion project.

In the meeting, Airport Director Sanjay Tyagi briefed the minister on the latest status of the expansion project, transport officials told PTI.

The minister was briefed on the installation of Instrument Landing System for better visibility during landing and take offs in bad weather condition, they said.

Earlier, Lyngdoh inspected the ongoing construction of the Inter-state bus terminus at Mawiong, adjacent to the scenic Umiam Lake, about 13 km from here.

The NEC was funding the project at a cost of nearly Rs 50 crore, of which the second instalment of Rs 400 lakh was released last month.

The North Eastern Council (NEC) had earlier released Rs four crore out of the total Rs 48.31 crore sanctioned for the project.

Construction of the proposed ISBT at Mawiong was approved by the Planning Commission in 2012.

Once operational, the bus terminal was expected to accommodate as many as 200 buses.
