The Centre today termed as "misleading" Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi's reported statement that growth rate of tourism sector in the country was not up to the mark.
"It is a misleading statement. Tourism sector has grown in the country. Tourist footfalls have increased in many states including Jammu and Kashmir, Kerala and Gujarat," Union Tourism Minister K Chiranjeevi told reporters.
"It is a political statement to mislead people," he said after the launch of the 'Clean India' campaign at the Taj Mahal here.

Many steps have been taken for growth of tourism in the country, the minister said.
Speaking at the function, Chiranjeevi said "There is a plan to conduct night bazar in Agra to promote local handicrafts and local cuisine."
The Government has launched the 'Clean India' campaign with the twin objectives of providing a hygienic environment in and around tourist destinations and attracting more visitors.
