NCP MLA Jitendra Awhad today said the Centre's move to import sugar was affecting the cultivators Maharashtra.

Before the commencement of the state Legislature's sitting for the day, Awhad arrived at the Vidhan Bhawan here with a bag of sugar and distributed small serves to some people in their hands to protest the government's move.

He claimed that the Centre's move to "import around 15 lakh tonne sugar from Pakistan" was affecting the sugar mills and sugarcane cultivators in the state.

"The government is not supporting the Indian sugar mills and hence creating problems for farmers. I am distributing sugar in protest against it," Awhad told reporters.

He alleged that the BJP drags Pakistan during election campaigns.

"Then how can it (government) import sugar from Pakistan which is going to have a severe impact on the Indian farmers, specially from Maharashtra," the legislator said before going inside the Vidhan Bhawan.
