NDMC Mayor launches sanitation, anti-corruption helpline

Press Trust of India New Delhi
Newly elected North Delhi Mayor Ravinder Gupta today launched a new helpline for citizens, seeking to make the city "garbage-free and corruption-free", even as the opposition sought to puncture the "ambitious plans" of the BJP-led corporation.

The Mayor Helpline -- 9643096430 -- however, is not a toll-free facility and will attract local telephone charges.

"Citizens can call on this number or send text messages or photographs on Whatsapp regarding any situation on sanitation or corruption-related issues," Gupta told reporters after being elected as Mayor.

The officials will have to respond to the complainants received through the helpline "within 24 hours", he said.

"For sanitation-related complaints, the nodal officer for this project is the deputy commissioner (Department of Environment Management Services or DEMS) of the respective zones and for corruption-related complaints, the nodal officer is director of vigilance," said Gupta.

North Delhi Municipal Corporation (NDMC) has six Zones -- City, Rohini, Narela, Sadar Paharganj, Karol Bagh and Civil Lines.

The helpline would function from 9 AM to 5 PM on weekdays, but citizens can post complaints otherwise, using text messages or through internet messaging application Whatsapp during weekends and other holidays.

"We have connected the phone line with an answering machine and complaints would also get recorded during absence of our staff beyond working hours, through it," Gupta added.
