One person killed as roof of abandoned coal mine caves in

A villager engaged in illegal mining of coal in Hazaribag district was buried alive when the roof of the abandoned mine caved in, police said today.

Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO), Qaiser Ali said 40-year-old Bishnu Dayal Mahato, a resident of Badam village under Rahalpura Panchayat, was allegedly engaged by the coal mafias yesterday in illegal mining of coal from an abandoned coal mine.

His body has been retrieved from the abandoned mine under the jurisdiction of Barkagaon police station with the help of the villagers and sent to Hazaribag town for post mortem examination.

The SDPO said police swung into action following the incident and levelled the coal mines with the help of bulldozers to check the illegal mining of coal in the region.
 

Police have also registered case against the coal mafias and a launched a drive to arrest them.
