Youth wings of three major opposition parties in Mizoram today thretened agitation if the state government went ahead with its proposal to hand over the lone Lengpui Airport near Aizawl to the Indian Air Force.

The youth wings of the Mizo National Front (MNF), Zoram Nationalist Party (ZNP) and Mizoram People's Conference (MPC) issued a joint press statement here warning that they would launch a strong agitation if the Congress government went ahead with the proposal to hand over the airport to the IAF.

Accusing the state government of fiscal mismanagement resulting in shortage of fund for maintenance of the Lengpui airport, which they described as an invaluable asset of the state, the opposition youths said that the proposal exposed the "maladministration" of Congress government in the state.

"Earlier, the state government had proposed to hand over ownership of the airport to the Airport Authority of India (AAI) and now was again trying to give it to the IAF," the press statement said.

The statement said that if the IAF operated warplanes from the Lengpui Airport, Aizawl city would be targeted by the enemies in times of war with other countries.
