Male teachers below the age of 50 should not be posted in schools for girls, Punjab's school education department has proposed, drawing a sharp reaction from the teachers' union.

"No male teacher below the age of 50 years shall be posted in Girls' Schools," a draft of the teacher transfer policy, 2018, said.

The draft was put on the department website seeking feedback within 15 days.

Government Teachers' Union, Punjab, however, trashed the proposed move.

We "condemn" the proposed move of the state government not to post teachers below the age of 50 years in girls' schools, said the union president Sukhwinder Chahal.

"It is wrong to question the character of a teacher whose job is to teach students. We will strongly oppose this move if it is implemented," Chahal said.

A spokesman of the state education department said the draft teacher transfer policy was uploaded on the portal to seek suggestions.

The main objective of the policy was distribution of human resources in an optimal manner to protect the academic interest of students and maximize job satisfaction among employees in a fair and transparent manner, the draft said.

The policy shall be applicable on teaching cadre posts including ETT, master, lecturer, vocational masters, principals and headmasters, according to the draft policy document.
