Phoobalan, Shazuli in joint lead in all-India chess tourney

P Phoobalan and Syed Anwar Shazuli, both of ICF, Chennai, shared the lead with five points after the fifth round of the St Peter's School 1st All India Open FIDE Rated chess tournament at Kodaikanal today.

Sharing the second spot with 4.5 points were nine players including top seed N Lokesh, International Master R Balasubramaniam and Kodaikanal player M V Lakshmi Narayanan among others, said a press note here.

Earlier, in the fourth round, top-seed N Lokesh had been held to a draw by I Sathananthan.

The 248-player eight-round Swiss event, with Rs.3.10 lakh prize money concludes tomorrow.

Important results - Round 5: C Sivakumar (4) lost to Syed Anwar Shazuli (5), Ram S Krishnan (4) lost to P Phoobalan (5), P M Karthik (4.5) drew with Lakshmi Narayanan (4.5), R Balasubramaniam (4.5) drew with Gowtham K K (4.5), R Anup Shankar (4) lost to Saranya Y (4.5).
 

N Lokesh (4.5) beat T Aravindaswami (3.5), Mani Bharathy (4.5) beat Rahul Bharadwaj (3.5), Mrithyunjay Mahadevan (3.5) lost to T G Rohit Ramanan (4.5), Senthil Kumaran T H (4.5) beat I Sathananthan (3.5).
