At least 36 advocates were injured in police lathicharge on agitating lawyers when they were marching toward the Rajasthan Assembly to press for their demands for better remuneration.
The incident took place when the Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot was presenting state budget 2013-14 in the Assembly.
A few policemen were also injured in stone-pelting by the lawyers near Ambedkar circle, police said.
"The lawyers crossed Ambedkar circle and marched ahead towards the assembly building. They were prevented by the force but they pelted stones prompting the police to resort to lathicharge in order to bring the situation under control," a senior police official said.
The advocates, who were demanding a monthly stipend for new practising lawyer for a period of five years and housing scheme among others, alleged that they were brutally beaten by the police.
They claimed that over 70 advocates including women lawyers were injured in the incident.
However, a doctor attending on the injured at SMS hospital said that 36 advocates were treated out of which four were hospitalised.
"We demand action against the Police Commissioner B L Soni who ordered lathicharge on the lawyers. We were peacefully marching but they instead of stopping us lathicharged and targeted all," Rajesh Pareek, a lower court advocate said.
After the incidents, the advocates announced to go on indefinite strike. Almost 5,000 lawyers from different district were the part of the agitation.
