The police today arrested 29 members of an anti-influx group for violating section 144 of CrPC and staging a dharna outside Chief Minister Mukul Sangma's residence here.

The agitators were demanding strong anti-influx laws and implementation of the Inner Line Permit (ILP) system in the state, police said.

The protest by members of the Hynniewtrep Youth Council (HYC) started within an hour of the chief minister leaving his Polo Hills residence to attend the winter session of the Assembly.

They were also booked under various sections of the Meghalaya Police Act, East Khasi Hills Superintendent of Police Davis Marak, told PTI.

HYC leader Donboklang Kharlyngdoh said they wanted to remind the government to pass an official resolution in the Assembly for implementing their demands.
