A local court today sent religious preacher and member of adhoc Haryana Sikh Gurudwara Management Committee (HSGMC) Baljit Singh Daduwal to judicial custody in connection with an Arms Act case against him.

Duty Magistrate Vishesh remanded Daduwal to judicial custody till September 6 after he was produced before him after the expiry of his one-day police remand.

As he was taken to the jail here, Dauwal's wife Sukhmeet Kaur's attempt to meet him turned futile.

Daduwal had recently led a group of Sikhs to take possession of the historic gurudwara in Guhla Cheeka town in Kaithal district of Haryana.

Police, after his arrest on Friday in a five-year-old case of rioting and attempt to murder, had slapped a fresh case against him under the Arm Act after allegedly seizing illegal weapons, including pistols, guns and 300 bullets from him.

Meanwhile, an uneasy calm prevailed at Kot Shamir village of Bathinda district after the arrest of Daduwal as he is a religious preacher at Gurudwara Jandalisar. SGPC had taken control over the gurudwara managed by Daduwal.

However, HSGMC President Jagdish Singh Jhinda described Daduwal's arrest as "vendetta" by Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal and SGPC. The SGPC and Akalis have refuted the charges.

SGPC said Jandalisar shrine did not belong to Daduwal and it will be looked after by the village panchayat now and in case of any help the religious body (SGPC) is there to help the villagers in managing affairs of the gurudwara.
