SDPI stages protest against Centre's cattle ban

Social Democratic Party of India (SDPI) members today staged a protest here against the Centre's ban on sale and purchase of cattle at animal markets for slaughter.

The protest organised by the Bengaluru district unit of SDPI was attended byover 100 people with banners and flags.

The protesters shouted slogans against the Centre and demanded "justice". They were later detained.

Calling the detention "anti-democratic", SDPI in a statement said that the Centre was trying to snatchaway people's right over choice of food.

It said the state government was giving external supportto the Centre, by detaining "peaceful protesters" who are raising their voice against the move, with the help of police.
 

Karnataka Law Minister T B Jayachandra had earlier said that the Centre's move was "anti-Constitution" and an "attempt to encroach upon the powers of the states".
