Security has been beefed up across Punjab, Haryana and their common capital Chandigarh for the Independence Day celebrations tomorrow.

A thick security blanket has been thrown in Gurdaspu, a border district where Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh will unfurl the tricolour tomorrow.

Besides, security has been strengthened in several other parts including Ludhiana, Amritsar, Ferozepur, Karnal, Panipat, Ambala and Union Territory of Chandigarh, officials said.

"We have made foolproof security arrangements," said a Punjab Police official.

Special security arrangements have been made in border districts of Punjab, with around 1,000 policemen including members of Special Security Group (SSG) team being deployed in Gurdaspur.

"Security has been tightened in Gurdaspur and security personnel are on alert," Gurdaspur SSP Bhupinderjit Singh said today.

Notably, Dinanagar town of Gurdaspur and Pathankot air base had witnessed terror attacks in 2015 and 2016 respectively.

Meanwhile, special checks were being carried out by security personnel at bus stands and railway stations in the two northern states and the Union territory to check anti-social elements, officials said.

Special check points were also set up at various places in the states at entry and exit points to check vehicles and movement of suspicious persons.

CCTV cameras have been set up near vital installations and vulnerable points to ensure a peaceful Independence Day.

The police across Punjab, neighbouring Haryana and Chandigarh also asked operators of guest houses, cyber cafes, and taxi services to keep a watch on customers and report any suspicious persons.
