A group of thieves barged into the shop of Prakash Chand, who lived upstairs with his family in Siddharth Vihar colony late last night, they said.
After hearing commotion, Chand raised alarm and chased the thieves with the help of his neighbours, police said.
An exchange of fire took place between the miscreants and Chand. People caught hold of one of the thieves and thrased him badly.
He was rushed to a nearby hospital where doctors declared him brought dead.
