Tenzing-Hillary Everest Marathon to begin on May 29

Eleventh edition of the world's highest marathon, Tenzing-Hillary Everest Marathon, will be organised on May 29 coinciding with the Diamond Jubilee Celebrations of the first human ascent of Mt Everest, the highest peak in the world.

Tenzing Sherpa and Edmund Hillary had climbed the Everest for the first time on May 29, 1953.

During the 42,195 km marathon, some 107 international runners will start the race from Everest base camp situated at an altitude of 5,364 metre and ends at Namche Bazaar situated at 3,446 metre altitude.

Himalayan Expeditions Inc is the organiser of the grand event aimed at promoting mountain tourism in Nepal.
 

"The main purpose of the event is to promote Nepal as one of the best destinations for adventure sports in the world," said a press release issued by Nepal Tourism Board.

The Everest Marathon was first conducted in May 2003 to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the first successful ascent of the Mt Everest.

Dubbed as the world's highest marathon, the event has been attracting increasing number of participants each year.

In the marathon, 21,2015 and 10 runners are participating from the UK, Netherlands, Germany and the USA whereas one runner from India has confirmed his participation in the event.

In the parallel event another "60 KM Diamond Jubilee Extreme marathon" is also being organised with the participation of eight runners from different countries.
