Transport workers strike in support of ILPS

Public transport was today hit across Manipur as both state government department personnel and private operators boycotted work in support of the demand for implementation of Inner Line Permit System in the state.

The strike paralysed movement of inter-state and inter-district bus and taxi services in the land-bound state.

There was no autorickshaw or private taxis on the streets of the capital town of Imphal and the attendance at the main market Kwairamban was thin.

Trucks too kept off the road and only a few non-commercial vehicles were seen plying.

The agitation for implementation of ILPS since July 8 has seen the death of a student and the indefinite curfew relaxed in Greater Imphal on that day is still on, albeit with daily relaxations.

The agitation is being spearheaded by Joint Committee on Inner Line Permit System (JCILPS) to "safeguard the interests of the indigenous people".
