With a gender ratio of 963:1000 in the electoral rolls this time, Tripura has surpassed the national average of 908.

The state is also exploring the possibility of setting up polling stations solely run by women in the forthcoming Lok Sabha election slated for April 7 and April 12.

State Chief Electoral Officer Ashutosh Jindal said, "In the sphere of gender ratio, Tripura is better positioned this year than in 2009. We are having 963 women per 1000 men in the electoral roll this year."

"We had women-run polling stations during the 2013 state assembly election. We are working on the issue for the Lok Sabha election as well", he said.

Approximately ten polling stations are expected to be solely run by women this year, he added.

Reacting to the state recording a higher gender ratio in electoral roll than the national average, working president of All India Democratic Women's Association (AIDWA) Krishna Rakshit said the gender ratio in general is also higher in Tripura than the national average.

She claimed that the women in the state are more conscious and empowered in contrast to other parts of the country as a result of which female foeticide is less.

Rakshit said that women turnout in the polls is also better than the rest of the country.

"More than 90 per cent of female voters cast their votes in the last Assembly elections held last year," she said.

In Tripura the tribal people constitute one third of the state population (about 37 lakh) and tribal women are equally conscious of their rights in this state, she added.

A total of 2,385,559 voters, including 1,170,360 females, in Tripura are eligible to exercise their franchise in the current Lok Sabha elections.
