Two civilians were injured today when security forces opened fire in "self defence" to disperse a stone-pelting mob in Anantnag district of Kashmir during a cordon and search operation, police said.

Security forces launched a cordon and search operation in Ashmuqam area of Anantnag district following information about presence of militants in the area, a police official said.

The official said as the security forces were going about their job, a group of around 100 persons resorted to stone-pelting at them.

"The security forces fired few rounds in self defence, resulting in injuries to two persons who have been referred to hospitals in Srinagar for treatment," he said.

The injured persons have been identified as Javaid Ahmad Wani (22) and Amir Sheikh (21).

The official said the situation in the area is tense but under control.

Meanwhile, National Conference condemned the "unprovoked" firing on the civilians and demanded a judicial probe into the incident.

Party General Secretary Ali Mohammad Sagar said National Conference also demands that the "erring" security forces personnel should be brought to book without any delay.

NC's MLA from Pahalgam Altaf Kaloo, who visited Ashmuqam to meet the people, alleged that there was an issue of a local mosque in which Army personnel interfered, smashed window panes of the houses, beat up inmates and later resorted to "indiscriminate and unprovoked" firing.

A two-member party delegation also visited the injured undergoing treatment in separate hospitals here, the statement said.
