A Delhi court has sentenced two persons to life imprisonment for murdering a man by stabbing him and robbing his mobile phone.

Additional Sessions Judge Rajeev Bansal awarded the jail term to Sattender and Sushil, residents of South Delhi, and also imposed a fine of Rs 10,000 each on them after holding them guilty for the offences under Section 302 (murder) and Section 397 (causing hurt in committing robbery) of the IPC.

The court also sentenced third convict Ram Singh to rigorous imprisonment of seven years for causing hurt to victim Ramu while robbing him and imposed a fine of Rs 7,000 on him.

"Having regard to the manner in which the offence was committed and the circumstance that multiple stab injuries were given to the victim who succumbed to the same, I deem it appropriate to sentence convicts Sattender and Sushil to undergo imprisonment for life...For the offence under Section 302 IPC...," the judge said.

"Accused Ram Singh is acquitted for the offence under Section 302 IPC as there is no overt act of stabbing attributable to him, the court added.

According to the police, Ramu, a driver, was murdered on September 7, 2008 in Kotla Mubarakpur here and his body was identified by his neighbours.

On the fateful day, when Ramu was climbing the stairs of his house, Sattender and Sushil came from behind and tried to rob his mobile phone and when he resisted, they stabbed him with a knife, it said.

Subsequently they fled from the spot taking away the mobile phone of the victim, which was later sold by Sattender, police added.

While convicting the three men, the court held, "the motive of the attack was robbery as the accused persons wanted to snatch mobile phone of the deceased from him and there is nothing on record that the accused persons would be falsely implicated in this case."

Sattender, Sushil and Ram Singh sought leniency on the ground that they were young and came from a poor background.
