Two persons, including an elderly woman, died and three others sustained injuries today, when the car in which they were travelling fell into 200 feet deep gorge at Kallatti on Ooty-Gudalur Road.

A family of four was returning home at Puthurvayal, some 80 KMs from here, in a taxi driven by Sasi, police said.

As the car reached the 36th and last hairpin bend, there was a mechanical fault in the brake and Sasi lost control, resulting in the car falling into the gorge, police said.

Sasi (38) and Janaki (68) died on the spot, while Ramakrishnan (48), Madhurani (42),daughter of Janaki, and their 19-year old son Vignesh sustained serious injuries, they said.

Some car passengers following the ill-fated car, got down and rescued the injured and sent them to government hospital here, in an ambulance, which is on the mover on the highway, police said.

Arrangements are being made to bring the bodies to hospital for postmortem.

Considering the seriousness of injuries, the injured are likely to be shifted to Coimbatore, police added.
