After being issued criminal contempt notice, members of the bar association from Kolhapur, Sindhudurg, Ratnagiri and Satara districts today gave an assurance to the Bombay High Court that they would never boycott from work or hinder court proceedings in future.
A division bench of Justices A S Oka and V L Achiliya had in early September issued criminal contempt notice against the office-bearers of the bar associations of Kolhapur, Ratnagiri, Sindhudurg and Satara districts for abstaining from work to demand a circuit bench in Kolhapur.
The members of the Kolhapur Bar Association had also taken out a mock funeral procession of retired Chief Justice Mohit Shah.
The lawyers had also gone on a day's strike claiming that their demand seeking establishment of a circuit bench in Kolhapur was not fulfilled.
The high court had while issuing contempt notices said even assuming that the lawyers' demand for a circuit bench is legitimate, it still does not permit them to take law in their own hands.
The concerned bar associations today assured the court that henceforth it would not boycott or hinder court proceedings by abstaining from work.
The bench directed the associations to file an affidavit stating so.
The Maharashtra and Goa Bar Council today informed the court that it has passed a resolution against these bar associations. The court sought to know from it what action it has taken.
