In a bid to reclaim public spaces and to protest the Bengaluru molestation on New Year's Eve, women in the national capital today carried out a march as part of a nationwide campaign.
The #IWillGoOut campaign, which found roots on social media platforms like Twitter and Facebook, started from Barakhamba before culminating at Jantar Mantar here.
The protest march is expected to reach the streets of at least 23 cities even as it was scheduled in Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Pune, Mumbai, Nagpur, Bhopal, Chandigarh, Puducherry, Karimganj, Gurugram, Kolkata, Lucknow, Jaipur and Ranchi this evening.
One of the tweets from @WhyLoiter?, which mooted the idea early this month, lays down the motive of the campaign as to oppose "victim blaming".
"There was a general sense of victim blaming in advance that so many women talk about.
"The notion that women are responsible for anything that happens to them outside the home," @WhyLoiter posted on Twitter.
"See you on the streets. In our high heels. In our sneakers. In our dresses. In our saris. Together. Alone.
"You will find us claiming the streets. Walking. Dancing. Singing. Running. Smiling. Talking. Loudly. Just. Being. There.
"You will not scare us off. You will not run us off. You will not intimidate us into staying away," it said in a series of posts.
