A 21-year-old youth succumbed to his burn injuries at a hospital during treatment, five days after he tried to commit suicide by putting himself on fire allegedly due to family problems, police said today.

Bharat Bhushan of Mundia Kheda village succumbed to his burn injuries yesterday at PGIMS Rohtak, police said.

He was apparently distressed because his in-laws had been ill-treating him since he got married with Ruby about 15 months ago, they said.

However, police could not confirm the reasons behind his in-laws' behaviour.

According to police, Bhushan was further agonised after his wife left him against his wishes and moved to her parental home at Fatehpur village in Jhajjar district. On June 16 he tried to commit suicide at his home by sprinkling petrol on himself, police said.

He was admitted to PGIMS Rohtak in critical condition, with severe burns, where he succumbed to the injuries during treatment yesterday, police said.

Prior to his demise, police had recorded Bhushan's statement at the hospital and registered case of abetment of suicide against his wife Ruby, his father-in-law Hari Om, mother-in-law Kamlesh Devi, and brother-in-law Kapil.

The accused persons would soon be apprehended, a police official said.
