A youth was critically injured today as he was hit by a rubber pellet in the head during clashes between protesters and police in Soura area of the city.
Protests broke out at several places in the city late in the afternoon over the administration's refusal to allow Hurriyat conference to hold a rally to observe the death anniversary of its two leaders, official sources said.
They said protests were held at Soura, Sarafkadal, Hawal and Rajouri Kadal areas of the city which turned violent, leading the police officials to fire teargas shells and rubber pellets to chase away the protesters, the sources said.

Suhail Majeed (22) was hit by a rubber pellet in the head during the clashes, they said, adding he was rushed to nearby SKIMS hospital, where his condition is stated to be critical.
Hurriyat had planned to hold a rally at Eidgah graveyard to pay tributes to its slain leaders Mirwaiz Mohammad Farooq and Abdul Gani Lone, who were killed on May 21 in 1990 and 2002 respectively.
However, authorities refused to allow the rally and placed the top separatist leadership under house arrest.
