BSCAL

Alltel has been awarded a $200 million contract by Hughes Ispat (HIL), the consortium that will build and operate a state-of-the-art wireless local loop telecommunications system serving Mumbai and the surrounding areas of Maharashtra.

Joe T Ford, Alltel chairman and chief executive officer, said the contract is a model for how Alltel can help start-up telecommunications companies worldwide. Alltel, drawing on its expertise both as a telecommunications and information services firm, will provide business process consulting services and long-term outsourcing of information technology to the consortium.

HIL holds a basic telecommunications license for Maharashtra. The communications network will handle more than 2.5 million telephone lines in Maharashtra.

Ford said, We are in a unique position to provide enhanced value to this industry segment, because we excel in two key areas telecommunications and information services.

With regard to telecommunications, we are providing the intellectual capital developed over 50 years as a wireline and wireless communications company. For the information services side, we are providing new technology applications specific to the telecommunications industry.
