Geb Brings Down Distribution Losses To 18.6 Per Cent

Gujarat Electricity Board (GEB) has been able to bring down transmission and distribution losses of power in Gujarat from 23 per cent in 1991 to 18.6 per cent in 1995-96, according to its chairman, S J Coelho.
Consumption of power for agricultural purposes was not measured while preparing the data, he said.
There was a feeling in many quarters that considerable theft of energy was taking place from rural feeders catering to agricultural demand. Since consumption of energy by these feeders was not measured through meters, there was a scope for unauthorised and illegal use of energy, he said.

Coelho opined that it was necessary to install meters on all the rural distribution transformers for assessing the actual consumption of energy from the feeders and to establish how much energy was being consumed by other users. Another factor for the distribution loss was overloading of feeders for a veriety of reasons-- both technical and non-technical, he said.
Coelho suggested that 11 kv distribution system and sub systems should be improved by upgrading the size of conductors, capacity and quality of transformers, he said in an article published in "GEB news magazine" recently.
