Gargi Chakrabarty BSCAL

GEC Alsthom is planning to invest heavily in the automated painting sector in India. The global major has bid for automated car paintshop projects with Maruti Udyog Ltd and Telco (Tata Engineering and Locomotive Company).

The company has placed its bid for Maruti Udyog's Rs 200 crore paintshop project. The project, expected to be commissioned within the next two years, will be the first automated paintshop set up by the company. The paintshop will be set up at Maruti Udyog's car plant at Gurgaon in Haryana.

The company has also bid for the Rs 100 crore paintshop project at the Pune car plant of Telco. Automated painting comes under the industrial equipment division of the company which is a global leader in the manufacture and supply of a wide-range of equipment.

The company is also planning to invest in areas like surface treatment systems, filters and pumps for industry, power plants, irrigation and pumping stations.

The power transmission division of the company manufacturers a full range of products for the transmission and distribution of electricity at all levels from the generator to the end-user.

GEC Alsthom is planning to invest heavily in other core competency areas like power transmission and distribution.

The company is installing DC power transmission lines which are cost effective in the long-run. Besides the Chandarpur project which connects the northern and western blocks, it is setting up another project which would connect the eastern and southern blocks.

Both the projects would be on a turnkey basis which implies the company would provide the design, install, commission and maintain these projects.

GEC Alsthom is a joint venture between General Electric Company and Alcatel Alsthom. The company has a strong base in Europe where over half of its manufacturing plants are located.

The company operates through five divisions namely power generation, transmission and distribution, transport and industrial and marine equipment.
