Honeywell To Introduce Aircraft Software Package

A new indigenously developed software package belonging to US aviation giant Boeing will be introduced in aircraft shortly.

The package called the Common Display Systema computerised display unit- has been put together by a team of Honeywell India Software Operation (HISO), Bangalore. HISO, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Honeywell Inc, US, is into developing computer software solutions for defence, space, aviation and the home market.

Successfully flight tested on Boeings new 737-700 in Seattle, US, the company plans to install this package in almost all its aircraft beginning with the 737 series.

Honeywell project manager C H Venkatesh Murthy told Business Standard, It was exciting to hear about how well the system display performed. Specially because the investment for Honeywell for this project alone was a mammoth $25 million.

 

A year back, HISO had tied up with Boeing to replace all their electromagnetic aviation control displays on its new 737-700 aircraft with computerised ones. With Boeings takeover of McDonnell Douglas, this contract will be extended to the Douglas MD-90 aircraft as well.

Honeywell India hopes to net $50 million worth of business with Boeing by the end of the current financial year.

The `Common Display System, which comprises six flat-panel cockpit displays, will collate and co-ordinate information from all avionics sub-systems and flight controls. Earlier, the cockpit had only electromagnetic instruments for flight controls.

The Boeing 737-700 twin-engine is the latest version of the 737 series aircraft. More than 3,000 of this variety has been ordered by over 150 customers spread over 81 countries.
