Italian Bullet-Proof Carmaker Eyes India

Gargi Chakrabarty BSCAL

Industrie Fontauto Spa, the Italian company specialising in armoured cars and vehicles, is in talks with Tata Engineering & Locomotives Company (Telco) to start operations in the country.

Sources said, Fontauto is keen to launch independent projects, which would involve armouring vehicles manufactured by other automobile companies.

Initially, Fontauto proposes to set up a body building plant within an automobile plant. The company would import the required bullet proof body panels and other security gadgets from its productions centres located in Europe.

Fontauto claims its bullet proof vehicles are safer and more cost effective than any other high security conveyance system in the world. At present, it is conducting a market survey in the country to figure out the demand for bullet-proof vehicles.

In India, only government organisations are allowed to purchase such vehicles.

The company, for commercial reasons, might postpone its plan until such times the government provides insurance premium reliefs to private customers, seeking to fix their cars with high security gadgetry.

Once the policies are changed, interested parties could directly send their vehicles to Fontautos workshop to pad it up with high security gadgets.

Industrie Fontauto Spa was set up by Giovanni Fontana 80 years ago. Security is the objective that guided the development of Fontana familys industrial activity. The company has its own research and development centre to develop high-level security systems in vehicles.
