It was first published a decade ago, but this book on leadership remains a bestseller and the sales continue to grow. The book reveals how people behave under pressure, which brings out their true nature – which is ultimately what leadership is about. It is not about what one does, but what he is. Thankfully, it also shows us a way of dealing with such situations while being true to our principles. The book also features five integral parts of leadership – accountability, conflict resolution, hiring, personal growth and teambuilding.

The Leadership Challenge
James M Kouzes, Barry Z Posner
One of the business bestsellers on leadership, this one is well into its fourth challenge and has sold millions of copies in the past 20 years. The book is to-the-point and research-based, making it one of the Bibles on leadership. The new edition has more business examples on an international level with more case studies and featuring real-life people. Pick up a copy for the “ten commitments” and “five practices” the book is known the most for.

Strengths-based leadership
Tom Rath, Barry Conchie

The authors make excellent use of Gallup scientists who have researched on leadership through thousands of interviews of leaders as well as followers. The results talks about key traits to prove how unique talents in any leader can drive success. The book also has Gallup’s StrengthsFinder, a popular assessment exercise for special gifts in a person. Pick up a copy for inspiration, research and ideas that can be put to use.

The first 90 days: Critical success strategies for new leaders at all levels
Michael Watkins
A large number of managers take on the role of a leader every year and each position requires a different set of skills to excel. Needless to say, the first few months are not just a learning experience but pose several challenges, too. The book gives sound advice on how to take on the new role – from being mentally prepared and handling office equations to being on the ball as a leader. With ample examples for do’s and don’ts, the book is a must-be for aspiring leaders.

The 21 irrefutable laws of leadership: Them and people will follow you
John C Maxwell
This one is touted as one of the biggest books on leadership of all times. The new updated edition only makes it more interesting. Two news laws are added to the existing 21 laws of leadership, which have also been updated and new case studies have been included. Exercises that appear at the end of every chapter make the reading more proactive.
