New Schools For Managers

BSCAL

Three premier industrial groups "" the Tatas, the house of Godrej, and ABB "" are preparing to stump up Rs 2 crore each to sponsor management institutes which will be established as centres of excellence under the initiative of the Confederation of Indian Industry.

After the successful launch of the Calcutta management institute sponsored by about 20 business groups, the Tatas, the House of Godrej and ABB have picked up a "centre for excellence" each, which are expected to commence training by January. The institutes will be set up in Gurgaon, Mumbai and Bangalore.

The silent initiative launched by the CII in its centenary year is focused on setting up management institutes, each concentrating on a particular aspect of management.

The Mumbai institute, being sponsored by the House of Godrej, will be a centre for imparting training on old and new styles of management. Interestingly, the institute will train managers in a lot of Indian practices of management like the Marwari, Parsi and the Gujarati system of accounting.

The CII is not stopping at the promotion of ethnic Indian practices alone; it intends to introduce Sinhalese and Buddhist management practices in the syllabus.

The Mumbai institute will start operations in January from the Godrej school premises until the building to house the institute is complete.

The Bangalore institute, which is being funded by ABB, will concentrate on total quality management and will be open to state government and PSU employees as well. The steering committee of the Bangalore institute, headed by ABB chairman K N Shenoy, hopes to start training by January.

The Gurgaon institute, to be funded by the Tatas will focus on "leadership issues", where senior managers and chief executives will be trained in handling the challenges of technology and management.

The management of the institute is currently negotiating with the authorities for the allotment of a fresh plot of land.

The Calcutta institute, which is running an integrated graduate development scheme for young managers and supervisors, has been sponsored by about 20 companies of the region including Nicco, RPG and Exide.
