Onion Prices Continue To Rule Firm

Onion continues to remain out of reach of the common man as prices remained firm due to poor arrivals from producing centres. At present, onion prices were quoted in the retail market between Rs 18 and Rs 25 a kilo.
Rajiv Maniar, secretary, Kanda Batata Adat Vyapari Sangh, said, "The prices have not yet fallen because of shortage of stocks. Old stock is almost finished but arrival of new crop is very low."
The current daily arrival of onion to the Vashi wholesale market from Bhavnagar in Gujarat, the largest supplier of onion to the country, is between 2.7 lakh to 3.6 lakh tonne as against the normal arrival of about 6.3 lakh to 7.2 lakh tonne, he added.

However, he was hopeful that the new crop would start arriving in large quantities from February 15.
Prices of potato were also rising sharply for the last couple of weeks due to poor arrival as 25 per cent of the potato crop was damaged following severe cold weather in the potato cultivating areas of Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat and Punjab.
