Pennwalt In Tieup With Italian Firm

BSCAL

Pennwalt Bertuzzi, a joint venture company between Pennwalt of India and Bertuzzi of Italy, is in the process of setting up four turnkey food processing plants in the country.

As part of the programme, the company is currently installing a Rs 20 crore plant in Kerala for the Kerala Horticulture Development Programme. The project is being funded by the European Econo- mic Community.

The other projects are to set up similar plants in Himachal Pradesh, Mizoram (Mizoram Food & Allied Indus- tries Corporation) and in Chittor, Andhra Pradesh. The projects are being funded by the food ministry. The company exports food processing machinery, besides installing turnkey projects.

The other major domestic players operating in the food processing machinery industry are Larsen & Toubro and Alfa Laval. The industry is considered to be a sunrise one and is set to usher in the era of brown revolution, after the green revolution and the white revolution seen earlier.

India has a huge potential for food processing, since it is the second largest producer of fruits and vegetables after Brazil and China, respectively.

The market for food processing at present is said to be growing slowly and has the potential to grow at four times the rate.
