Sc Issue Notice To Up, Cpcb

The Supreme Court yesterday issued a notice to the Uttar Pradesh government andthe Central pollution Control Board on a petition alleging that the Singhrauli region was contaminated by several industries. Earlier, it had directed all municipalties and industries inthe Ganga basin states of UP, Bihar and West Bengal to install water treatment plant, However, the petitioner, enviornmentalist M C Mehta complianed that there was little improvement in the situation.

The bench consisting of Justice G B Pattanaik and Justice Y K Sabharwal asked the government and the board to file statements giving details of the steps taken by the authorities subsequent to its earlier order in the case. The board was also asked to survey the three states to assess the damage caused and to identify the polluting industries.
