South Korea's merchandise trade deficit shrank in April, and the first good news on the trade front this year sparked cautious optimism that an economic slump may be bottoming out. The trade ministry said on Thursday the customs-cleared trade deficit narrowed to $1.5 billion in April from a $2.04 billion shortfall a year earlier.
