Task Force To Monitor Plastic Wastes

Inaugurating a national conference on plastics and environment here yesterday, Biswas, who has been selected as the chairman of the task force, said it would recommend incentives, penalties and levies for checking the growth of plastic packaging waste. He said the term of the 16-member task force would be for six months.
The order issued by the environment and forests ministry yesterday pointed out that the consumption of plastics has increased significantly in recent years.
The damage caused to the environment by discarded polythene bags is considerable. Even though plastics are very amenable to recycling yet the effort is not an organised one.
Referring to the problems faced by the recycling industry Biswas said the government and industry should cooperate to improve pollution control measures to be adopted in the sector.
Biswas said though plastic can be used for several purposes, the management of discarded plastics, whether from hospitals, household or industry, was a major problem. If you already face such problems in meager production of plastics what will happen in the large=scale production,
