Akamai upbeat about India

With the Indian economy looking up, Akamai Technologies, the global service provider for accelerating content and business processes online, has firmed up plans to enhance its market presence in the country.
The company has created one of the largest and most widely used on-demand distributed computing platform, with over 20,000 servers in nearly 1,000 networks in 71 countries. It aims at helping organisations grow their online businesses without growing the IT infrastructure.
At present, Akamai has a headcount of 100 at its Bangalore centre. It also plans to raise the headcount to 150 by the year end. Akamai opened its new office in Bangalore on Tuesday.
"India is crucial for us since the nation occupies the second position in the global media market. We provide scaleable and secure platform for media and entertainment businesses. Some of the top electronic media companies in India are our clients. With more media houses planning to go online through portals, we are in a good position to tap the market," Akamai Asia Pacific director Stuart Spiteri stated on Tuesday.
Spiteri pointed out that the Indian online media market is expected to catch up with that of China by 2009.
"At present, India has a vibrant offline media market. But five years from now, the online media market is expected to achieve substantial growth and create adequate space for us to enhance our business in this country," he added.
The company will also tap the Indian music industry. "Rediff offered online music with our technological assistance. We are looking for more such developments. Unfortunately, the music industry, particularly the Hindi film world, has not given a serious thought to the issue of rights," he added.
Akamai will focus on other sectors like travel and tourism, airlines and hotels and the BPOs, he said.
