The wife of a minister of state has been calling journalists, particularly women journalists. She has been requesting that as women they should show solidarity with her and defend her in print. The wife's grouse is that some of the recent reportage about the cabinet reshuffle was unfair towards her. Her husband was relieved of his earlier portfolio and given a new one. A couple of reports insinuated that it had something to do with his wife's career, and in particular a party hosted at the minister's residence where the ministry officials were also present. The wife has been complaining that the source of these reports was her husband's former boss at the ministry, and that if hosting a party was a crime, the same yardstick should be applied to a senior leader who hosted his daughter's wedding at his official residence.

After spending sleepless nights over parliamentarian Azam Khan's lost cows some months back, Uttar Pradesh police have taken up an issue which is less than earthly. An Unidentified Flying Object (UFO) that had been spotted by some local youths in Kasganj district of the state is now under the scanner of the UP police. Last heard, while the young man who took a couple of pictures of the UFO was untraceable, the state police was confirming the authenticity of the images. Apparently, the meteorological department has been asked to come up with a possible explanation for such "sighting" in the sky.

On Monday, Information and Broadcasting (I&B) Minister M Venkaiah Naidu, along with Minister of State Rajyavardhan Rathore, made an unannounced tour of the ministry offices at Shastri Bhawan at 9.30 am. Not unexpectedly, many officials were missing from their work stations. Later the minister tweeted: "Explanation sought from those who were not present at the time of inspection." He also said: "Directed concerned Joint Secretaries to review issues related to punctuality and cleanliness in the offices on daily basis." Naidu also emphasised that open cables should be avoided as they were a fire hazard. In 2014, a fire had destroyed several files in an I&B ministry office in Shastri Bhawan.

With reference to "The jihadi challenge" (July 11), there is no doubt that challenges in front of the central government are manifold and I agree with your suggestion that both jihadi threat and militancy need to be handled differently. The issue becomes all the more complex and disturbing when we learn that people like Burhan Muzaffar Wani and all those who killed innocents in the Dhaka cafe were educated and from well-to-do families. So, it is to do with the mindset which needs to be addressed accordingly.First and foremost, the government needs to formulate a strategy about how to stop people like Zakir Naik, whose outfit Islamic Research Foundation's suspicious activity in attracting youth towards terrorism has come under light. The Maharashtra government might have delayed probing his organisation's source of funding etc., but at least in future it should be on its toes to see that such bodies do not grow at all. "Worst-case scenario for the banking crisis" (July 11) makes a case for hastening the process of "privatisation" of India's banking system. There are similarities between the way in which public sector mutual fund UTI was handled when private mutual funds found its presence uncomfortable and the approach of analysts like Ajay Shah to the public sector banks' (PSBs) predicament. It is easy to get confused by comparisons in totally different situations. Let us be clear that there is no "banking crisis" in India as of now. This is not to deny the need to urgently tackle the problems faced by the sector due to policy lapses spreading over a decade or so.As private sector banks have failed to grow and improve their share in India's banking business to any respectable level despite under-performance by PSBs, the country is left with no option but to rejuvenate PSBs.
