Govts before 2014 didn't work wholeheartedly to create welfare state: Shah

Governments before 2014 worked piecemeal while trying to achieve the Constitutional objective of a welfare state but this concept was turned into reality by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union minister Amit Shah said on Saturday. Shah said Modi understood the mantra that "development of India cannot happen until its 60 crore population remains poor", and worked to lift 25 crore people from poverty in the last 10 years. "However, a government can never do such a big work alone. If trusts, individuals, and service organisations come together, we will soon come out of this problem," the Union Home Minister said while addressing a gathering at the annual Gujarat Lok Seva Trust event in Ahmedabad. Following a very learned debate, Constituent Assembly president Rajendra Prasad had concluded that establishing a welfare state should be the basic purpose of the Constitution, Shah said. The basic objective of creating a State by ensuring the welfare of every person, equal development, and th

Rise above politics, help landslide-hit Wayanad people: Priyanka to Shah

A delegation of parliamentarians from Kerala led by Wayanad MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra met Home Minister Amit Shah on Wednesday, seeking the Centre's support for landslide-affected people while urging him to rise above politics and be more forthcoming in providing relief. Priyanka Gandhi said there are landslides-affected people in Wayanad who have no support system left. If the Centre cannot step up in such circumstances, it sends a very bad message to the entire country and especially to the victims, she said Speaking to reporters with several Kerala MPs by her side after meeting Shah in the Parliamentary House premises, Gandhi said, "We apprised him of the situation there and told him how people have been devastated because the river's entire course has changed and everything was washed away." There is a focus area of the natural disaster but its impact is huge and people do not have any support system left, the Congress leader said. "Families, houses, businesses, schools, everyt

Conviction rate to go up with new criminal laws, says HM Amit Shah

The conviction rate will go up with the implementation of the new criminal laws that will then lead to a drop in crimes, Union Home Minister Amit Shah said on Tuesday. The biggest feature of the new criminal laws is that their soul is Indian and their objective is to provide justice, he further said. Shah was addressing a gathering at an event where Prime Minister Narendra Modi dedicated to the nation the successful implementation of the three new criminal laws. The new laws -- the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita and the Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam -- came into effect on July 1, replacing the British-era Indian Penal Code, Code of Criminal Procedure and the Indian Evidence Act, respectively. Chandigarh has become the country's first administrative unit to achieve 100 per cent implementation of the three laws. After the implementation of the new laws, justice will be ensured in less time, the conviction rate will be higher and, because of that, the crime

Raised issues hoping for Centre to act but I was attacked instead: Kejriwal

AAP national convenor Arvind Kejriwal on Sunday targeted the BJP-led central government for alleged inaction on law and order issues here, claiming that instead of taking action against criminals, an attack was orchestrated on him during his November 30 padyatra in Malviya Nagar. The BJP has yet to respond to the allegations. Speaking at a press conference, Kejriwal said, "The liquid thrown on me was harmless, but it could have been dangerous. This is the third attack on me in the last 35 days." The former chief minister also accused Union Home Minister Amit Shah of sending the message that complainants, rather than offenders, will face arrest. Kejriwal also criticised the arrest of AAP MLA Naresh Balyan, who had earlier filed a complaint about extortion by gangsters. "Instead of arresting criminals, they are targeting our MLAs," the AAP chief alleged, demanding action against the real offenders to ensure the safety of Delhi's residents. Delh Assembly polls: Kejriwal continues attack on Centre over law and order

AAP supremo Arvind Kejriwal on Thursday intensified his criticism of the BJP-led central government, accusing it of failing to ensure law and order in Delhi. Addressing a press conference at party office, Kejriwal said, "There is an atmosphere of fear and insecurity everywhere in Delhi. Women feel unsafe stepping out after 7 pm and parents worry about their daughters going outside." He further alleged that incidents of extortion, shootings and public crimes have become alarmingly common under the watch of Union Home Minister Amit Shah. "The BJP and the Home Ministry have turned Delhi into a hub of extortion and violence," Kejriwal charged. While highlighting the achievements of AAP in health, education, and electricity during his tenure, the former Delhi chief minister criticised the BJP for its alleged mismanagement of law enforcement. He noted that although the Delhi Police is under the Union Home Ministry's jurisdiction, it has "failed to fulfil its responsibilities". Party le

Significant success achieved against terrorism, insurgency, narcotics: Shah

Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Thursday said significant success has been achieved in the past 10 years against terrorism in Jammu and Kashmir, left-wing extremism, insurgency in the northeast and narcotics, the four major challenges before the country. He credited the "firms" policies of the Narendra Modi government at the Centre for the success. Left-wing extremism will be eradicated completely by March 31, 2026, Shah asserted while addressing the valedictory function of the 99th foundation course at the Lal Bahadur Shastri National Academy of Administration in Mussoorie. "Terrorism in Jammu and Kashmir, Left Wing Extremism, insurgency in the northeast and narcotics are the four major challenges before the country. Due to the firm policies of the Modi government, significant success has been achieved in all four areas over the past 10 years," he said. The Union home minister also said the implementation of the three new criminal laws through the use of technology, replacing the
