'Shah's June 2019 Srinagar visit was to give final touch before abrogation'

Union Home Minister Amit Shah's visit to Srinagar on June 26 in 2019 was to give the final touch to the government's resolve for carrying out the abrogation of Article 370 in Jammu and Kashmir, Lt General (retired) K J S Dhillon has claimed in his yet-to-be-released book. 'Kitne Ghazi Aaye Kitne Ghazi Gaye', authored by Dhillon, will be released on February 14 as a mark of respect to the 40 Central Reserve Police Force personnel who were killed in a suicide car bomb attack in 2019 near Lethpora in South Kashmir. Amit Shah's visit on June 26, 2019, was already touted to be a precursor for a dramatic announcement and "I got a call at 2 am in the morning, informing me of a meeting with the home minister at 7 am", Dhillon said in his book. Without divulging much about his meeting with the home minister, the retired Lt General, who was the head of the army's strategic Srinagar-based XV Corps, wrote that "a lot of sensitive issues and key points were on the table for discussion apart from

Will continue fight for restoration of J&K's statehood: Ghulam Nabi Azad

The Democratic Azad Party (DAP) chairman Ghulam Nabi Azad on Thursday said he will continue to fight for the restoration of Jammu and Kashmir's statehood. The former chief minister also urged the Union government to fulfil its commitment over the same. Azad said his party will create diverse employment opportunities for the youth in a bid to bring lasting peace and stability to the Union territory. "I will continue to fight on the political front to ensure statehood is restored to Jammu and Kashmir and all the rights that were taken away on August 5, 2019, will be granted back to its people", Azad said during his visit to Udyanpur in Doda district. In 2019, the erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir was bifurcated into two Union territories - Ladakh and Jammu & Kashmir - and Article 370, which granted special powers to the state, was abrogated. Azad said for lasting peace and stability, his party will create diverse employment opportunities for the youths if it gets into power after

Nehru made 'blunders' on Jammu and Kashmir, PM Modi corrected them: BJP

The BJP on Thursday said Prime Minister Narendra Modi corrected "blunders" of Jawaharlal Nehru related to Jammu and Kashmir's accession to India by nullifying Article 370 and demanded an apology from the Congress. Addressing a press conference on the 75th anniversary of the region's accession, BJP spokesperson Gaurav Bhatia alleged that the first prime minister committed five blunders, including delaying action on the accession proposal of the region's king Hari Singh. Jammu and Kashmir, and the country in general had to pay a price for it while this allowed Pakistan to capture a part of the region (Pakistan-occupied Kashmir), he said. Bhatia quoted from Nehru's statement to assert that the king had first mooted the idea in July 1947 but the then prime minister dithered and allegedly prioritised his and his friend's interests, a reference to Sheikh Abdullah, while neglecting the country's. Hitting out at the Congress, he said, "If a timely action was taken, then there would be no p

Be it Ram temple or Art 370, Modi govt made possible what seemed impossible

Referring to the abrogation of Article 370 and the construction of Ram temple in Ayodhya, Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Saturday said the Narendra Modi government made possible what had previously seemed impossible. Shah was addressing an election rally of the ruling BJP in Himachal Pradesh's Sirmaur district ahead of the November 12 assembly polls. He said the Modi government abrogated Article 370 of the Constitution, which accorded special status to Jammu and Kashmir, on August 5, 2019. "Did you ever think that Article 370 would be abrogated," he asked the gathering. "If you talk to Congress leaders and workers about Article 370, they remain mum as its provision was made by Jawaharlal Nehru," he said. On the construction of Ram temple, Shah said, "Congress used to taunt us and say 'Mandir vahi banayenge, tithi nahi batayenge'." Prime Minister Modi started the construction of a grand Ram temple in Ayodhya, he said. "Be it construction of Ram Mandir or abrogation of Article 3

Nehru created mess in J-K, Modi govt cleaned it by revoking Art 370: Shah

Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Thursday said India's first PM Jawaharlal Nehru created a "mess" in Jammu and Kashmir by introducing Article 370 in the Constitution, but the Narendra Modi government rectified the error in 2019 by nullifying the provision that gave special status to the erstwhile state. Speaking at an event to flag off the Bharatiya Janata Party's 'Gaurav Yatra' in Gujarat, where Assembly polls are due in the next two months, Shah said the Congress used to often taunt his party over construction of the Ram Temple in Ayodhya, but work on the mega project was now in progress. The senior BJP leader flagged off one yatra from Zanzarka in Ahmedabad district and two others from Unai in Navsari district. Decorated vehicles are being used in these yatras. Due to the mistake of Jawaharlal Nehru, who inserted Article 370, Kashmir was in a mess... it could not be properly integrated with the rest of the country. Everybody wanted the removal of Article 370. Prime Minister ...

Congress slams former party leader Ghulam Nabi Azad over Article 370 stand

The Congress on Sunday accused its former leader Ghulam Nabi Azad of changing his stand on the Centre's move to abrogate Article 370 provisions after quitting the party and said his "lies" on the issue should be exposed. Azad has stated that he will not mislead the people over the issue of Article 370 as only a government with a two-thirds majority in Parliament can ensure the restoration of the provisions. The former Union minister has also said he will not raise issues over which he has no control. Responding to a tweet by J&K Congress leader Ghulam Ahmad Mir asking if Azad had signed the Congress Working Committee resolution following the Centre's move abrogating Article 370 provisions, Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh said, "Of course he did." "I was sitting behind him in Parliament when he spoke the previous day against abolition of article 370. His lies should be exposed," Ramesh said in a tweet. Article 370 did not obstruct J-K's development, says former CM Azad

Former Congress leader Ghulam Nabi Azad on Wednesday said Article 370 was not an obstacle in the development of Jammu and Kashmir, and claimed that the erstwhile state had performed better that national average on 30 indices. The former chief minister of Jammu and Kashmir also claimed that he never ruled out the possibility of the restoration of Article 370, but said it could be a time-consuming process, adding only Prime Minister Narendra Modi could do so immediately. "It (Article 370) was not an obstacle. (As the chief minister of Jammu and Kashmir), I introduced a three-shift work system, Assembly sittings were held six days a week, roads were built, a network of schools and colleges was created and environment clearances were given," Azad told reporters here. The former Union minister, who recently quit the Congress, said he had even countered Modi in Parliament on Article 370. "I have countered the prime minister and the home minister in Parliament on this issue. I have ...

Azad's remark on Article 370 his opinion, will fight for restoration: Mufti

Terming former Jammu and Kashmir chief minister Ghulam Nabi Azad's remarks on Article 370 a "personal opinion", Peoples Democratic Party chief Mehbooba Mufti on Monday said her party will fight for its restoration and "end injustice" in the Union territory. At his maiden rally in Kashmir after quitting the Congress last month, Azad had on Sunday slammed those promising the restoration of Article 370, saying it was not in their hands and that he would not mislead people over the issue. Mehbooba, however, said, "The way the Congress put an end to oppression by the British, there are voices in Jammu and Kashmir which believe that not will will Article 370 be restored but the (Kashmir) problem will also be resolved." At Kashmir rally, Azad slams parties for promising restoration of Art 370

As he prepares to launch his political party, former Congress leader Ghulam Nabi Azad on Sunday slammed those promising the restoration of Article 370 even though it was not in their hands and said he would not mislead the people over the issue. In his maiden rally in Kashmir Valley after quitting the Congress last month, he said only a government with a two-thirds majority in Parliament can ensure the restoration of the special status of Jammu and Kashmir. "Azad knows what can and cannot be done. I or the Congress party or the regional parties cannot give you back Article 370, neither can (TMC chief) Mamata Banerjee, or DMK or (NCP chief) Sharad Pawar," the former chief minister of Jammu and Kashmir said. The former Union minister said he would not raise issues over which he has no control. "Some people have been saying that I don't talk about Article 370. CJI Ramana retired without constituting bench for Article 370 pleas: Omar

Two days after Chief Justice of India N V Ramana retired, National Conference (NC) vice president Omar Abdullah on Sunday alleged he "very conveniently kicked into the long grass" the petitions against the nullification of Article 370, which accorded special status to Jammu and Kashmir. Abdullah shared a news report on Twitter about CJI Ramana's comments in April this year that the Supreme Court would hear the petitions after the summer vacation, and said, "And then he retired without ever constituting the bench. He very conveniently kicked it into the long grass." "Some people wonder why faith in these institutions gets eroded. Perhaps it has something to do with the way serious issues are handled," the former Jammu and Kashmir chief minister added. The Centre on August 5, 2019 abrogated Article 370 of the Constitution -- which gave special status to Jammu and Kashmir -- and bifurcated the state into Union territories. Several mainstream parties, including Abdullah's NC, challenge
