Country pays tribute to Milkha, PM describes him 'colossal sportsperson'

The entire country paid glowing tribute to Indian sprint legend Milkha Singh, who died on Friday, with the Prime Minister Narendra Modi describing him as a "colossal sportsperson who captured the nation's imagination". Milkha died in a Chandigarh hospital after a month-long battle with COVID-19, during which he lost his wife Nirmal Kaur, a former national volleyball captain, to the same ailment. He was 91 and is survived by his golfer son Jeev Milkha Singh and three daughters. "In the passing away of Shri Milkha Singh Ji, we have lost a colossal sportsperson, who captured the nation's imagination and had a special place in the hearts of countless Indians," PM Modi said in a tweet. 4X100m relay team can qualify for Tokyo Olympics, says Hima Das

Star sprinter Hima Das is confident that the Indian women's 4x100m relay team, of which she is a part, can qualify for the Tokyo Olympics during the World Athletics Relay in Poland next month. The top eight finishers in the World Relays on May 1 and 2 at Chorzow in Selisia will get automatic berths in the Tokyo Games, which is scheduled to begin on July 23. Hima, who is yet to qualify for the upcoming Olympics, is set to be a key member of the Indian 4x100m relay quartet, with the other three likely to be national record holder Dutee Chand, Archana Susenndran and S Dhanalakshmi. Himashree Roy and AT Dhaneshwari are the other members of the 4x100m relay team named by the Athletics Federation of India (AFI). "Dutee will also be a part of the team, we are confident that we can qualify for the Olympics during the World Relays. We should do it," Hima told PTI in an interview. PM to deliver inaugural address at Khelo India Winter Games ceremony

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will deliver the inaugural address at the opening ceremony of the second Khelo India Winter Games to be held at Gulmarg in north Kashmir from February 26 to March 2. Modi will attend the inauguration of the five-day long event via video conferencing on Friday, the Press Information Bureau said in a statement. The event is being organised by the Sports Ministry in collaboration with the J&K Sports Council and the Winter Games Association of J&K. The disciplines that will feature in it include alpine skiing, nordic ski, snowboarding, ski mountaineering, ice hockey, and ice skating among others. A total of 27 states, Union Territories and boards will be participating in the games.
