When the BJP picked Nayab Singh Saini as the Haryana chief minister in March to buck anti-incumbency, many felt a change of guard would not be enough to win elections. But the low-profile OBC leader proved all the naysayers wrong by steering his party to a third successive term in the heartland state. Not a nobody but not a somebody either when he replaced strongman Manohar Lal Khattar as chief minister, Saini was the BJP's man of the moment on Thursday when he was sworn in to head the state. The 54-year-old proverbial dark horse, who has risen through the ranks of the Haryana BJP, deftly changed public perception of himself and the party in a state which many thought would go to the Congress. The BJP won 48 seats in the 90-member assembly. Three Independents, including Hisar MLA Savitri Jindal, have also extended support to the party. Born in Ambala's Mirzapur Majra village on January 25, 1970, Saini served as minister in the Khattar cabinet between 2014 and 2019. During the past

Asserting that the future rests on the shoulders of the youth power, he said they must be nurturing dreams, hopes and aspirations from the state of Jharkhand which is barely 24 years old. "The process of 2.87 lakh appointments will be started immediately after the BJP government comes to power. Along with this, self-employment opportunities will be provided to 5 lakh youth so that such people can also join the mainstream of development who could not get employment opportunities earlier," said Soren, who joined the BJP recently citing "insult" and "humiliation" at the hands of JMM. "Many of you will be voting for the first time. A special request to those young friends is that by voting for BJP in Jharkhand, strengthen the hands of Prime Minister Narendra

Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren on Wednesday accused the BJP of plundering Jharkhand for about 20 years since its creation and claimed that he tried to strengthen the roots of the state during his five-year tenure. In a post on X marking 100 days of his release from jail, Soren noted social welfare programmes such as financial assistance scheme 'Maiyan Samman Yojna' and housing scheme 'Abua Awas Yojna' formulated by his government. "Today marks 100 days since I returned from jail and took charge of the state... In December 2019, with the blessings of the people of Jharkhand, I took over the reins of the state. My sole purpose was to irrigate the tree of Jharkhand and strengthen its roots. The BJP had plundered this tree with both hands for 20 years. It had dried it up," Soren said in a post in Hindi. "This was the reason that in the 20 years of Jharkhand, the poor, deprived and exploited people yearned for basic needs like social security. The tribals, Dalits, backward and ...

Ahead of the Maharashtra assembly polls, Chief Minister Eknath Shinde on Wednesday accused the opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi of working with an anti-development vision, as he along with allies presented a "report card" of his government's work. Putting up a united face, Shinde addressed a joint press conference here along with Deputy CMs Devendra Fadnavis and Ajit Pawar and Union minister Ramdas Athawale, a day after the Election Commission announced the state poll schedule. Fadnavis said the seat-sharing discussions among the ruling allies were in the final stages. The Mahayuti allies presented a "report card" of the government's work in the last two years, as Shinde, Fadnavis and Pawar accused the opposition of creating a "fake narrative". Flaunting the "report card" which compared the work done by the previous Maha Vikas Aghadi dispensation and the current Mahayuti government, Shinde said the ruling alliance was ready to go to the people's court. "The opposition Maha Vikas Aghdi
Ahead of the Maharashtra assembly polls, the ruling Mahayuti appears to have maintained a balance in the representation of various communities and tried to avoid any potential rebellion while nominating seven members for the MLC posts, as per political analysts. Of the seven new members of the legislative council who took oath on Tuesday, the BJP has nominated three, while the Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena and Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar's NCP have two members each. On Monday, the state cabinet cleared seven out of 12 names and received approval from Governor C P Radhakrishnan. With his approval, the swearing-in ceremony was held at the Vidhan Bhavan on Tuesday, hours before the announcement of the Maharashtra assembly elections. The newly sworn in MLCs are BJP's Chitra Wagh, Vikrant Patil and spiritual leader of Banjara community Dharmaguru Babusingh Maharaj Rathod, NCP leaders Pankaj Bhujbal and Idris Naikwadi and Shiv Sena's Manisha Kayande and Hemant Patil. The Kerala High Court on Wednesday stayed further proceedings in connection with the discharge of BJP state president K Surendran and five others by a sessions court from the Manjeshwaram election bribery case. Justice K Babu admitted the criminal revenue petition moved against the sessions court's October 5 order by the state government. "Admit. Further proceedings stayed. Post on November 8," the High Court said. On October 5, Surendran and the others were discharged by Kasaragod Sessions Judge Sanu S Panicker. The sessions judge, allowing the discharge plea of the accused, had said that the first accused -- Surendran -- was discharged of the offences under various provisions of the IPC and the Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe (prevention of atrocities) Act 1989. "Since the first accused is discharged of the alleged offences, I do not find any grounds to proceed against the other accused also. Hence, they are also discharged of all the alleged offences," the sessions court ha
Maharashtra BJP president Chandrashekhar Bawankule on Wednesday said Chief Minister Eknath Shinde should be willing to make "sacrifices", in terms of seat-sharing for the assembly polls, like the BJP has done to keep the alliance intact. The comments come a day after the Election Commission announced the schedule for polls to 288 seats in the state assembly. Voting is scheduled on November 20 and the counting will take place on November 23. "Chief Minister Eknath Shinde must remain open-minded and be willing to make sacrifices. We, too, have made sacrifices to uphold the alliance. It is evident that the BJP aims to contest the seats we previously held," Bawankule told ABP Majha news channel in Nagpur. As the dominant party in the alliance, it is only natural for the BJP to seek more seats, he said. Asked if Union Home Minister Amit Shah reportedly stated that the BJP "sacrificed" the CM's post while forging an alliance with Shinde-led Shiv Sena, Bawankule said, "I do not know what
The serene coastal belt of Maharashtra, including Mumbai, offers an interesting backdrop for a showdown between Mahayuti and MVA alliances in the next month's assembly elections, especially between two rival Shiv Senas. The most urbanised and industrial region, including the Mumbai metropolitan area, sends 75 MLAs to the assembly and 12 members to Lok Sabha. The coastal Konkan division in Maharashtra, spread from Sindhudurg to Mumbai, also covers Palghar, Thane, Raigad and Ratnagiri districts. Voting will be held on all 288 assembly constituencies in Maharashtra on November 20 and results will be declared on November 23. In the recent Lok Sabha polls, the Mahayuti alliance of Shiv Sena, BJP, and NCP, bagged seven seats. The BJP triumphed in Palghar, Ratnagiri-Sindhudurg, and Mumbai North, while the NCP, led by Ajit Pawar, had a face-saver in Raigad where its leader Sunil Tatkare retained his seat. In the upcoming polls, former Union Minister Narayan Rane, who won the ...
Union minister Jitendra Singh on Tuesday said from being a "taboo", the BJP rose with the highest vote share in Jammu and Kashmir, marking an incredible journey in the recent assembly elections in the Union Territory. Addressing a media conclave, Singh said the BJP registered its best ever performance in J&K and credited Prime Minister Narendra Modi for having introduced in the last 10 years a new work culture wherein the benefits of development and public welfare schemes reached to every section of society regardless of caste, creed or religion. "This was a huge departure from the politics followed by Congress party which was primarily based on vote bank considerations," the science and technology minister said. He said the BJP is a party that has ensured fair deal to every citizen, following the mantra for "justice to all, appeasement to none". Singh said there were times when a returning officer would reject all the nomination papers and accept only that of the ruling party ...
Samyukt Kisan Morcha (SKM) said on Tuesday that a lack of network of workers and farmers movements across villages and insufficient unity among them failed to decisively unite people against the BJP in the Haryana polls. In a statement, the SKM, which led the farmers' protests of 2020, said there are lessons to be learnt from Haryana election results and work towards uniting farmers and workers to fight the "corporate loot and anti-farmer policies" of the BJP-led Union government. "Even though the majority of the people had voted against the anti-worker, anti-farmer BJP, the opposition political parties failed to displace it from governance due to disunity and internal conflicts among them," they said. "Insufficient unity of the kisan movement and lack of network of workers and farmers movements across the villages to decisively unite the people caused the failure to isolate and oust BJP," SKM said. Appealing for greater unity of the farmer organisations, the SKM said it will take
The Congress on Tuesday claimed that the Mahayuti government in Maharashtra knows it is not coming back to power and has spent its last few days allegedly bestowing "gifts" on the Adani group at the expense of the people of Mumbai and the state. Ahead of the announcement of the Maharashtra Assembly polls schedule, Congress general secretary in-charge communications Jairam Ramesh said the instructions from the top are clear -- "the Mahayuti's electoral future is bleak, but before it loses power, it must safeguard Modani's financial future". "The ECI is expected to announce the Maharashtra Assembly Elections today at 3:30 PM. A desperate Mahayuti knowing it is not coming back to power has spent its last few days bestowing gifts to Modani at the expense of the people of Mumbai and Maharashtra," Ramesh said in a post on X. Listing the alleged favours to the conglomerate, Ramesh said, "September 15 2024: Modani wins energy contract to supply 6,600 MW power to Maharashtra at inflated ...
