Proposed UN resolution on Myanmar condemns military attacks on civilians

Britain circulated a wide-ranging United Nations resolution on Myanmar urging renewed peace efforts, condemning attacks on civilians especially by the Myanmar military and calling for a halt to illicit arms transfers. The draft resolution obtained Tuesday by The Associated Press expresses alarm at the increased violence across Myanmar, which is engulfed in civil war between the military-led regime and resistance forces. It calls for safe, rapid, and unhindered humanitarian access at scale," expressing grave concern at the deteriorating humanitarian situation and restrictions on humanitarian access in the country that led to rising food insecurity and hunger. The proposed resolution warns that the current situation has the potential to further exacerbate discrimination, ethnically motivated violence, violations of international humanitarian law, human rights abuses, and conflict-related sexual violence. Myanmar's military ousted the elected government of Aung San Suu Kyi on Feb. 1

British govt allocates funds to support Tata Steel's decarbonisation

The British government said it has begun supporting those affected by Tata Steel UK's decarbonisation process with the release of an initial GBP 13.5 million of funding, also available to affected workers for them to retrain or acquire new skills for the employment market. In a statement from the Wales Office on Monday, the government said the funding from the Tata Steel/Port Talbot Transition Board fund will support local businesses which are heavily reliant on Tata Steel as their primary customer, allowing them to turn towards new markets and customers where necessary. At a meeting last week, the board discussed how the funding will be allocated, monitored and evaluated to ensure value for the taxpayer. This funding is an important step towards supporting workers affected by Tata Steel's transition and businesses in the wider supply chain, said Jonathan Reynolds, UK Business and Trade Secretary. We're working in partnership with trade unions and industry to secure a green steel .

New coins featuring King Charles III with British bees go into circulation

The first one pound coins featuring King Charles III with a design incorporating British bees have gone into circulation in the UK from Tuesday, with a total of 2.975 million coins making their way into tills via Post Offices and banks around the country. According to the Royal Mint, the tribute to British bees is one of eight new designs that will appear on the country's coins in one pence to two pound denominations. They feature animals such as the Hazel Dormouse, Puffin and the Atlantic Salmon as all species which are in active conservation programmes, reflecting the 75-year-old monarch's environmental concerns. The Royal Mint has made the circulating coinage of each of Britain's monarchs since Alfred the Great and it is an honour to reveal that King Charles III's one-pound coin is now in circulation, said Rebecca Morgan, Director of Commemorative Coin at the Royal Mint. We know there'll be a buzz of excitement amongst collectors and the public to get this special piece of histo

Britain on alert for unrest despite anti-racism campaigners halting protest

British authorities said Thursday they were preparing for the possibility of further unrest, even as they applauded the efforts of anti-racism campaigners and police officers who largely stifled a threatened wave of far-right demonstrations overnight. Prime Minister Keir Starmer sounded the note of caution after a week of anti-immigrant violence that has scarred communities from Northern Ireland to the south coast of England. Starmer spoke to reporters at a mosque in Solihull, near Birmingham, where demonstrators shut down a shopping center on Sunday. It's important that we don't let up here, Starmer said. At an emergency meeting with law enforcement officers at his office, Starmer said on Thursday evening that police need to remain on high alert, Britain's Press Association reported. He credited strategic police staffing and swift justice for rioters in the courts for creating a deterrent that kept trouble at a minimum the night before. Police across the United Kingdom had braced
